1792:  Freemasons lay the first cornerstone for the White House.  The building earns its nickname due to the light-colored sandstone used in construction, but the name doesn't become official until President Theodore Roosevelt orders stationery engraved with "The White House."

1903:  The Boston Americans win baseball's first World Series by defeating the Pittsburgh Pirates.

1983:  The first cellular phone network is launched in Chicago.
