Status Update on Fayetteville Schools

Posted by Alan on February 1, 2009 2:54 PM | Filed in News |

18update.pngAlmost all Fayetteville Public Schools will be open for school tomorrow, Monday, February 2, according to superintendent Dr. Bobby New. Asbell Elementary School will not be open, and a decision on Woodland Jr. High will be made tonight.

Power has not been restored to Asbell, and problems with a transformer have delayed the restoration of power at Woodland. If the power at Woodland can be restored tonight, school will be held tomorrow. Woodland parents will be notified by phone tonight, the media will be contacted, and the district website updated.

New added that phone service at schools may be sporadic on Monday and asked parents and patrons to please be patient. Bus routes may also be delayed on Monday, due to the continuing cleanup around town.

"We are asking everyone to help spread the word about our schools being open tomorrow," said Dr. New. "We know there are still homes with out power, cable or phone service. If you know someone with school-age children who might not know that all of our schools except Asbell and possibly Woodland are open tomorrow, please help us get that word to them."

Several events that were affected by the ice storm have been rescheduled.

  • The first session of the community book read of The Global Achievement Gap will be held on Monday night at 6 pm at the Fayetteville Public Library. The second session will be held on Tuesday, February 3 at 6 pm, and the final session on Thursday, February 5 at 1 pm.
  • The "Ancient Cultures and Renaissance Museum" and "Photomania" exhibitions by the elementary and middle school gifted and talented programs will be held on Saturday, February 7 at 9 am at The Owl Creek School.
  • The Fayetteville High School baseball camps will be held on Saturday, February 14 from 8:30 am to noon for grades 3-5 and Sunday, February 15 from 12:30 to 4 pm for grades K-2.
