Poll Shows Support for New High School

Posted by Greg on March 27, 2009 1:15 PM | Filed in 21st Century High School |

A recent poll points to strong support for new high school facilities in Fayetteville.  More than half of those polled consider the current high school to be fair or poor, while almost 80 percent say the facilities need to be replaced.  The poll was conducted by Ernest and Zoe Oakleaf of Opinion Research Associates of Little Rock and drew responses from 403 registered voters.

Click here for an article in The Morning News that discusses the poll further.  You can find coverage from the Northwest Arkansas Times here.

PLEASE NOTE: Depending on your connectivity, the poll results might take a few minutes to download.

The accolades are still coming for these teams, and we'll post more news here about the upcoming celebrations!

Congratulations to both teams, their coaches, their parents, and their fans! This is one for the record book!

Project Graduation Needs Your Help!

Posted by Alan on March 5, 2009 4:50 PM | Filed in News |

graduate.pngThe following is from Libby Combs, the FHS faculty sponsor of Project Graduation:

Each year for the past 21 years, Fayetteville High School seniors have celebrated at Project Graduation, an all-night celebration which is held at the HPER Building at the U of A.  I was a sponsor for the first one in 1987, and I've been involved in more than I like to think about since then!!   All of the teachers, parents, and community members who work on this event are VOLUNTEERS ........ even me.  Since we have so many new teachers in our building, I wanted to explain the program to everyone.

This year I am hoping that some of you would like to get involved in the planning process and on the night of the event.  We want/need faculty. staff, students to all be involved in this worthwhile event.  I always tell the community that this is the one event that has the potential to effect every student who graduates from FHS.  Some people ask why I continue to be involved every year.   In my opinion the students deserve this from our community, as a congratulations for a job well done... a thank you from the community& the schools.  Also, to me it is worth all of the months of hard work to keep the kids safe on what traditionally is one of the leading nights where teenagers drink, drive, and die in our country.

We open the doors on graduation night at 10:00 pm and "make everyone leave" by 5:00 am.  Sometimes the students want to just sit outside and talk after the event, because they have realized that this is the last time they will be together as a group.  It truly is more memorable for the students when the faculty are involved.

In the past we have tried to provide a door prize for every student ranging from a few really large items to gift certificates worth at least $10-15.  Students pay $20.00 for a ticket; this entitles the graduate to a tee shirt, drawings for door prizes, and (If a student is on free or reduced lunch a ticket is comped.) During the evening graduates can participate in a variety of activities such as swimming, basketball, racquetball, wally ball (like Volleyball but in a racquetball court), mini golf, karaoke, a dance, Dance Dance Revolution, Guitar Hero,X-box tournaments, and a casino ( Black Jack, Roulette, Craps table, Poker, Texas Hold'em, etc)  We also have a wide variety  of  foods are  provided.

We have had wonderful corporate sponsorship over the years Hiland Dairy and Tyson have participated every year.  This year, however,  I'm a little worried about being able to keep the event at the level FHS graduates deserve. If you would like to participate at any level, I will have a meeting in my classroom (room 1003) on Thursday, 3/12/09 at noon.  Please consider helping with this event. If you want to participate but are unable to attend the meeting, please e-mail me at ecombs@fayar.net.   Graduation is 5/21/09.

Thank you .
Libby Combs
