youngbd.pngThe dedication ceremony for the newly named Ni-O-Ka-Ska Creek will be held on Monday, April 20th, 2009 at 1:00 pm.  The formerly unnamed Mud Creek tributary that originates along Root Elementary School was recently named Ni-O-Ka-Ska Creek in honor of the Osage Indians.  Ni-O-Ka-Ska, which means "Little Ones (or children) of the Middle Waters", is the ancient term used by the Osage when they referred to themselves.

The Root Elementary School Green Team began the creek naming project in September 2008 to educate students and the community about basic watershed management.  Root Elementary 4th grade students made a successful presentation to the Fayetteville City Council in February 2009, and a resolution to officially name the creek was passed.

Students of Root Elementary, and city and school officials will be on site during the dedication ceremony.  John D. Red Eagle, assistant chief of the Osage Nation, will also be in attendance as an honored guest.
