Assistant superintendent and athletic director Dick Johnson has announced the naming of Steve Oliver as the new FHS Bulldogs boys soccer coach. Steve comes to FHS after serving 10 years as the assistant soccer coach at the University of Arkansas and is known as one of the top goalkeeper teachers in America. "We are excited about having Steve Oliver join our FHS Athletic Staff, as he brings a wealth of soccer knowledge to our program. We believe Steve and assistant coach Rick Ternes will elevate our boy's soccer program to the next level," said Johnson.Oliver is a native of England and has been coaching in the United States since 1989. One of his first U.S. coaching jobs was as the director of the Soccer Concepts Schools in 1990, and he eventually took the director's job of the World Class Soccer School.
With coaching experience at many levels and in several countries, Oliver brings an international flavor to FHS. He has been the head coach or an assistant in the United States, England and Ireland. He has worked at the Olympic, professional, collegiate and
youth developmental levels. A student of the game, he has earned a pair of international coaching licenses, the UEFA 'A' license and IFA Goalkeeping Diploma.
During the summer, Oliver works as a College camp instructor and is involved in widely acclaimed Terry Venables Soccer Schools. Oliver also works with the Arkansas Comets club soccer team and continues work with other youth soccer organizations in Northwest Arkansas.
Steve is married to Katie Oliver, who is a math teacher at McNair Middle School. They have four children: Jessica, 14; Harry, 13; and the twins Abby and Lizzy, 9 who attend various FPS schools.
All new and returning Asbell students must enroll for the upcoming school year. You will be asked to fill out all paperwork needed for your child to start school on Aug. 6 and you will find out which bus your child will ride.
No child will be assigned a teacher, until all enrollment paperwok is complete. If you want to ensure that your child has a spot (whether they have attended Asbell in the past or not) come enroll your child this week between 8 and 3.

The new traffic light at Starr Road and Mission Boulevard is operation as of 10 am today, Wednesday, July 8. Mayor Jordan threw the switch start the full operation of the signal, which will provide much needed relief to the crossing guards and students walking to school at McNair Middle School and Vandergriff Elementary School. Just another great example of a joint effort between the City of Fayetteville and the Fayetteville Public Schools!!
Here's a photo of Mayor Jordan throwing the switch.
Earlier today, the Campaign for a Stronger Fayetteville kicked off with a press conference in the FHS lobby. The campaign goal is to pass a millage to fund the building of a new high school.
Speakers included Mayor Lioneld Jordan, President of the Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce President Steve Clark, A+ Stronger Fayetteville Campaign Co-Chair Missy Kincaid, FHS Choir Director Dawnelle Fincher, and future student of FHS Bella Couch.
Mayor Jordan said, "Let us not look at the new school as an expenditure, but rather an investment in our children and our children's children."
At the June 25th meeting, the Fayetteville School Board voted 6-0 to place a 4.9 millage increase request on the September 15 school election ballot for the construction of a new Fayetteville High School, based on master plan #2, which was recommended by the administration.
