Update on Flu and Preparations

sick.pngThe following is a letter sent to all staff members and parents today by superintendent Vicki Thomas:

August 27, 2009

Dear Fayetteville Public Schools Staff:

We want to inform you of the proactive stance the Fayetteville School District is taking regarding H1N1 influenza. Our #1 priority is to ensure the health and safety of all of our students and staff members.

School personnel are carefully watching for students who exhibit flu-like symptoms (fever, achiness, chills, cough, etc.) and are quickly sending these students to the school nurse to be evaluated. Any student or staff member who is determined to have flu-like symptoms is sent home and is instructed to see a doctor and to stay at home until all symptoms have been relieved for 24 hours without the use of medication.

Many individuals may experience influenza. The symptoms of H1N1 are similar to the regular seasonal flu and include fever of greater than 100°F, cough, sore throat, headache, and body aches, chills, and fatigue. Some have also reported vomiting and diarrhea. If your child develops these symptoms, please keep him/her home from school and contact your health care provider.

Please remember these effective steps to help prevent the spread of influenza:

  •  Always cover your nose and mouth with a tissue or your sleeve when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue into the trash immediately after you use it.
  • If you do not have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your sleeve.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Hand sanitizer is also highly effective.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth, as germs can be transmitted this way.
  • Try to avoid close contact with people who are ill.
  • If you are sick, stay home!

Extra precautions are being taken throughout the school district to ensure cleanliness. Our custodians are wiping door handles, hand rails, and desks in every building during the day and after hours with sanitizers to help further minimize the spread of germs. Restrooms are being cleaned and disinfected regularly.

Special thanks to Washington Regional Medical Center and school board member Steve Percival for providing and facilitating the installation of antibacterial hand wash dispensers in every classroom throughout the school district. Students and staff are encouraged to use these frequently.

If you would like to have more information on the H1N1 virus, please go to the Centers for Disease Control's website at http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/.

We will continue to keep you updated. Rest assured: the well being of our students and staff is our highest priority. Thank you in advance for your efforts as we work through this very sensitive influenza issue.

Best regards,

Vicki Thomas

1st Day Going Smoothly

Posted by Alan on August 19, 2009 1:21 PM | Filed in News |

back2school.pngBy all accounts, the first day of school in the district has gone well. Only the expected minor problems have surfaced as of 1:30 pm. The weather may snarl things for the afternoon dismissal, but we'll deal with that when and if it occurs.

August 19 was the first day of school for all of our schools except Asbell and Happy Hollow Elementary Schools, as those schools operate on continuous learning calendar. Their first day of school was August 6.
