Beatles_-_Abbey_Road.pngThe 6th Annual Crosswalk Safety Awareness Day will take place in Fayetteville on Wednesday, October 14, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

It's Not a Choice, It's the Law!

The purpose of the event is to bring awareness to the general public that it is both a state and a city law that a motorist must yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.  Also, it is just as important to increase awareness to pedestrians that it is their responsibility to look both ways and make sure the cars are going to stop before entering the crosswalk.

The event is sponsored by the Community Policing Division of the Fayetteville Police Department and was inspired by participation in both the first Fayetteville Citizen's Police and Fire Academies.  Both the University of Arkansas Police Department and the Fayetteville Police Department have noted that the event has made a difference in increasing awareness and aiding the safety of both pedestrians and motorists.

In addition to the annual event there is ongoing focus on intersections and crosswalks that need attention.  The biggest physical contribution was the mutual efforts that led to the new stop signals and crosswalks at the intersection at the southwest corner of the Fayetteville High School campus.

The event is open to groups to sponsor a crosswalk.
