breakfastkid.pngFPS Food Services is working with local farmers and organizations to provide a special Farm to School lunch to three elementary schools in February. Dates for the upcoming Farm to School lunches are as follows:

  • Wed., Feb. 22 - Asbell
  • Thurs., Feb. 23 - Leverett
  • Friday, Feb. 24 - Washington

The lunch menu on these days will feature locally sourced protein and produce, including chicken and winter squash.  Apple Seeds, Inc. and local farmer, Charity Lewis, will provide educational programming to students about healthy, local food before lunch each day.  The menu and programming will be very similar to what was offered in October at Happy Hollow, Owl Creek, and Butterfield.  You can read more about the October program in the feature story at this link.

Parents and volunteers will be invited to attend lunch on these days to serve as "lunch buddies" encouraging students to try the new foods.

These lunches are part of the larger Farm to School initiative in the district.  The district, in coordination with University of Arkansas horticulture professor Dr. Curt Rom, recently received a Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) grant to test the feasibility of sourcing more food locally and regionally on a regular basis.  The program will implement a pilot purchasing program with local farmers for the summer feeding program at Owl Creek.
