Fayetteville Proclaims Sherri Wheeler Day

For each of the past ten years, Vandergriff 2nd Grade Teacher Sherri Wheeler has organized a book drive to benefit the Fayetteville Animal Shelter.  Named after her dog Charlie Brown, the book sale has generated a grand total of approximately $30,000 for the shelter.

This year, in honor of Wheeler's commitment, Mayor Lioneld Jordan proclaimed May 24th, 2012 Sherri Wheeler Day in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

"I am shocked and overwhelmed," said Wheeler, who appeared visibly moved when she was surprised by the proclamation at a school assembly on Thursday by City Council member and Vice Mayor Bobby Ferrell.

Books are donated to the sale at Vandergriff, and then sold for $.50 each.  "It raises money for the shelter, but also provides kids with inexpensive books for the summer," said Wheeler.  Her second graders work in the book sale, collecting, sorting, and selling the books, and many others at Vandergriff volunteer their time and energy.

From $250 the first year, the sale keeps growing, with almost $5,000 raised this year.

This year Mrs. Morrow's 4th grade class brought in the most books.  Their prize was to see their teacher get an onstage kiss from book sale mascot Charlie Brown at the assembly.

Wheeler said, "I would be glad to help any school set up a fundraiser like this one to benefit the animal shelter."  Click here to contact her.
