009-CivilRights.pngOn April 16th, 2013, the 50th anniversary of the day that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. began writing his now famous Letter from the Birmingham Jail, participants worldwide read Dr. King's Letter in celebration. The Birmingham Public Library created a web site for participants to register public readings from the Letter at various locations around the globe: libraries, museums, schools, universities, etc.

In Fayetteville, public readings were held at City Hall, the Fayetteville Public Library, and the Clinton House Museum. Fayetteville Public Schools also participated by videotaping excerpts from the letter so that they could be replayed for students and the public to view. Associate superintendent John L Colbert was joined by Curtiss P. Smith, pastor at St. James Missionary Baptist Church, and Jonathan Beasley, pastor at Church of Arkansas, to read excerpts from Dr. King's letter. The video is available on FPS-TV on Cox Channel 217, AT&T Uverse 99 and streaming from our website. Click here to see FPS-TV program schedule.
