Paul Hewitt Named Next Superintendent

Paul_Hewitt.pngThe Fayetteville Board of Education has selected Dr. Paul Hewitt to serve as the next superintendent of the Fayetteville Public Schools. Hewitt is currently associate professor of Educational Leadership in the University of Arkansas College of Education and Health Professions. He brings a long history of expertise in education with a career spanning over 35 years in public education, including 17 years as a superintendent. Hewitt has also served as principal, vice principal, dean of students, and teacher in a variety of California school districts. He has served on the faculty at the University of Arkansas since 2007.

Hewitt will take over officially as superintendent on July 1, 2014, but his transition with the current superintendent, Ms. Vicki Thomas, and district leadership will begin immediately.

Schools in Session on Saturday, May 3 and Memorial Day

squirrel-snow-day.pngAll FPS schools on the traditional calendar will be open for classes on Saturday, May 3 and Memorial Day (Monday, May 26) to make up two of our snow days. Food service will be provided, and the buses will run. The only change is the dismissal time, which will be ONE HOUR EARLIER than the normal dismissal times. Schools will begin at their normal start times.

Woodland Boys Win Conference Track Title, Third Title This Year

Twenty-Nine FPS Students Qualify for Duke Recognition

tip_logo.pngTwenty-nine seventh-grade students from the Fayetteville School District have qualified for recognition in the Duke University Talent Identification Program.

The search is conducted throughout a 16-state area. More than 64,000 students participated in the program, that awards recognition on the state and grand levels. The SAT and ACT assessments are designed for college-bound high school students in the eleventh and twelfth grades. The tests measure knowledge and skills rarely taught in junior high schools. To score high, students have learned a great deal at home, by independent study or by special instruction.

In Arkansas, 961seventh-graders in 141 public and private schools from 95 districts participated in the program. Of those taking the test, 458 qualified for state recognition and 40 for grand recognition.

Garrett Grisso, Albert Ko, and Paul Lefforge qualified for both state and grand recognition and will be invited to attend the National recognition ceremony in May at Duke University, N.C. They represent 8% of Arkansas students who qualified for grand recognition.

Parent Meetings on Enrollment Distribution Set for April 14-17

ptomeeting.pngProposed changes to the Fayetteville Public Schools middle school and jr. high attendance zones will be shared at public meetings April 14-17. The Enrollment Distribution Committee will hold three parent meetings to present their recommendation on enrollment distribution changes for the 2015-16 school year. The meetings will be

  • Monday, April 14: Owl Creek Cafeteria, 6:00-7:00 pm
  • Tuesday, April 15: Holt Band Room, 6:00-7:00 pm
  • Thursday, April 17: McNair Band Room, 6:00-7:00 pm
In 2012, the Fayetteville Board of Education approved the recommendation by the Grade Reconfiguration Committee to reconfigure the grade levels for our district beginning School Year 2015-2016, which is the year the Transformation of Fayetteville High school will be
complete. The grades will be configured as follows:

  • Elementary Schools: Grades K-4
  • Middle Schools: Grades 5-6
  • Junior High Schools: Grades 7-8
  • Fayetteville High School: Grades 9-12

In 2014 the Enrollment Distribution Committee convened with updated enrollment forecast data. This committee will be presenting their recommendation on how to distribute the enrollment to our middle schools and junior high schools beginning School Year 2015-2016. FPS Again Named Top Ten Digital School District

Digital Schools.pngFor the sixth consecutive year FPS has been named to the Top Ten Digital School Districts in the U.S. in the Digital School Districts Survey by the Center for Digital Education and the National School Boards Association.
